This still appears to be a very trendy question to ask. So many people are now out on pedal assist bikes, it is a normal thing to see. The Lime bikes in London are left scattered across our capital and are used by the “cheating” masses. Who’s the fool I ask? The person arriving late and sweaty to a meeting or the early, cool headed cheat?
I ride a fabulous Trek Rail 5. With two replacement knees my fitness isn’t what it was but I still want to get out. My lovely red, full suss, heavy, electric mountain bike allows me to ride, far and fast. I’m in a crew of lads that go out most Friday nights (weather permitting) to a distant pub. We use byways, big lights and roads as little as possible arriving hot, muddy, thirsty and hungry. Clean trousers donned to keep pub seats clean, we share stories and knowledge of all things bike over dinner. And of course discuss electric over muscle. Refuelling with hot grub and cool drinks sets us up for a slightly faster route home. The distance and terrain covered would be a challenge for a standard bike, even for Lance Armstrong….!
There used to be a great brand called “Fat Lad at the Back” that we saw at all the pre COVID shows. The name demonstrates that speed is irrelevant and just being out is key. The advent of superb battery technology and a more affordable electrified help means if the “Fat Lad at the Back” can now keep up, then good for him, or her of course.
Get out. Get sweaty. Get riding.
