No Fault Cycling Accidents

Cyclist compensation and claims for all types of bike accidents.

What Should I Do Immediately After a Cycling Accident?

Get to safety

Move out of the road if you can. Your safety comes first.

Call 999 or 101

If you’re injured, call 999. If not, report the incident via 101 so there is a police record.

Get the driver’s details

You need:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Vehicle registration
  • Insurance details

If they refuse, take a photo of the vehicle and call the police.

Gather evidence

This is crucial for your claim. Collect:

  • Photos of the scene
  • Damage to your bike
  • Injuries
  • Road layout
  • Weather conditions
  • Witness names and numbers
  • Helmet‑cam footage (if available)

Seek medical attention

Even minor injuries should be checked. Medical records support your claim.

Keep your damaged bike and kit

Do not repair or replace anything yet. Your bike, helmet, and clothing are evidence.

What can I claim for?

Cycling accidents can unfortunately lead to injuries and all sorts of losses.

Here are few of the things we’ll help you claim for;

  • Sprains such as wrists and knees
  • Broken bones and fractures
  • Dental and facial injuries
  • Skin abrasions or road rash
  • Defective bike including EBike fires
  • Concussion and head injuries
  • Replacement clothing and possessions
  • Loss of earnings if you can’t work
  • Medical expenses

There are lots of different things that can happen in an accident, and we’ll do our best to accommodate all your needs and losses.

Car Door Opening

All accidents are terrible, but some are more terrible than others. A car door opening suddenly in front of you allows very little time to react and the impact can be really hard.

Car drives are often as shocked as the cyclist and generally desperate to help.

Car Pulling Out Accident

As cyclists are so much smaller than cars, we are easier to miss. Cars pulling out or across your path re common causes of accidents. Some drivers are unaware of the law but awareness is fast improving.

See our “Safe and Defensive Cycling” guidelines to help you stay seen and safer.

Bike Roundabout Accident

Roundabouts can be treacherous places to ride with car drivers making unpredictable lane changes. We often use the Highway Code and Google Earth images to help prove liability where it is questioned.

Talking to witnesses and the other party will help get your claim off to a god start.

Sometimes it’s Your Fault

Cyclists are much more vulnerable than motorists and sometimes forget to obey the road rules. Even if you feel an accident wasn’t your fault, sometimes we can’t help with a cycling claim.

We’ll work as hard as if it wasn’t your fault but we can’t always win.

Cycling Pothole Claims

Potholes can be very hard to see especially in the dark and wet.

The Orange Spokes claims team are cyclists and fully understand the impacts pothole and badly maintained roads conditions can cause both to you and your bike.

What our customers are saying …

” I was knocked off my bike when a car driver pulled out of a side road and hit my left leg. The team at Cyclist Claims UK arranged for a new bike for me as my frame was bent and the compensation I got really helped because it took over 6 months to heal my leg. Brilliant service but I hope I never need them again !

Frances Emile

Islington, London

I originally used Cyclist Claims initially for advice after my accident and then for cycling compensation a few years ago after I had a car crash. They were brilliant then and were as good with my bike claim. Me and my friend were in a hit and run accident but thanks to a witness we were able to get the car driver’s details. The team at Orange Spokes were really efficient and kept us up to date for the whole claim process. 10/10 service !

Nicola C

Hope, Derbyshire

“Brilliant service. The compensation I got was amazing and was more that I’d expected. I dealt with Aidan and he got me money for a new bike, computer, helmet and clothing as my bike was run over. I have recommended Cyclist Claims UK to a couple of mates who both hit the same pothole ! Keep up the good work!”

T Ahmed

Cyclist, London

” After being knocked off my bike twice last year , Cyclist Claims helped both times, once for my bike and then with another bike and some compensation for my injury. I have now decided to get the bus to work and cycle for fun and not for commuting. The solicitors Aidan arranged for us were excellent and I was always kept updated of the progress from Orange Spokes. There are no cars on the cycle routes in Glasgow so hopefully I’ll be safe now! ”

Finlay Dougall

Glasgow

“Great service, super fast and efficient. I wasn’t injured but they still helped be get my bike fixed so I can get to work still”

JC Steele

Frinton, Essex

“This is a great set up. the advice I received left me in no doubt what was going to happen and what I needed to do. I used another cycling claims compensation firm a couple of years ago and they were terrible, really slow and I had to call to find out what was happening with my compensation. Nicola at Cyclist Claims UK was really helpful and would call me just to tell me that latest development with my case. Cycling accidents are awful and having a good company to help makes it all so much easier”.

Can a cyclist claim compensation for a hit and run?2026-03-17T15:12:41+00:00

Yes, you can. It can be tricky and there is no guarantee that it will work, but we use a government backed scheme called the Motor Insurance Bureau. Each case is looked at on an individual basis so there is no hard and fast rule.

Can I claim from another cyclist?2026-02-12T12:33:46+00:00

Potentially. It can be tricky, but we have some clever ways to help. For example, they have cycling insurance it will cover you and also some household insurance policies have third party cover.

Can I claim for just my bike repairs and not cyclist compensation?2026-02-12T12:33:13+00:00

Yes, often you can but we need to look at each bike claim on an individual basis before we decide.

How do you get paid?2026-02-12T12:32:50+00:00

The industry standard now is that we generate our income from a percentage of your settlement. We don’t get paid until you get your compensation.

What does No Win, No Fee mean?2026-04-14T11:53:07+01:00

If we take your case on, we believe we will win it. If we do, we get paid and you get your cycling accident compensation. If we are unable to win your case and we’ve done a load of work, we’ll not charge you. That is of course unless you are telling us a pack of lies or if the accident was staged.

In a nutshell, we only get paid if we win your case. We will however make all the enquiries we need to establish who is at fault and if we can win your case.

How much compensation will I get?2026-04-14T13:13:07+01:00

How Much Compensation Can I Get After a Cycling Accident?”

These figures are approximate and not a guarantee. If your claim is successful you may receive less or more.

  • Injury Type Description Typical Compensation Range
Minor Injuries Soft‑tissue damage, cuts, bruising, short recovery £1,000 – £4,000
Fractures & Broken Bones Broken wrist, arm, hand, or similar fractures £5,000 – £25,000
Index Finger Fracture Fractured index finger with ongoing symptoms £7,780 – £10,440
Head & Brain Injuries Minor head injury to severe brain trauma £1,880 – £350,000+
Back & Spinal Injuries Moderate back injuries to life‑changing paralysis £38,000 – £493,000+
Psychological Injury (PTSD / Anxiety) Mild to severe psychological harm £4,820 – £100,000+
    Knee Injuries (Minor–Moderate) Soft‑tissue damage, bruising, minor ligament issues £1,000 – £13,000
Knee Injuries (Serious) Torn ligaments, cartilage damage, long‑term instability £20,000 – £38,000+

What if the other person disputes liability?2026-04-14T12:12:53+01:00

Accidents are not always clear cut. We will look at the road layout and speak to both parties. Crucially we’ll talk to any witnesses and the insures and make a decision based on all the information we can get. Even if we believe the accident wasn’t your fault and the third party’s insurers do not, we’ll fight your corner with the full force of the law.

Don’t forget, you won’t be charged for any of the work we do if we can’t win your claim.

Drivers are not always at fault but an emphasis is put on them to be on the lookout for cyclists. The Highway Code follows a hierarchy of responsibility and the motorist has the responsibility to look out for smaller road users.

Gain as much information as you can and let us and our solicitors work on your behalf.

How long do I have to make a claim?2026-04-14T13:49:54+01:00

How Long Do I Have to Make a Claim After a Cycling Accident?

Three Years

In the UK, you usually have three years from the date of your cycling accident to start a personal injury claim. This is known as the “limitation period” under the Limitation Act 1980.

Why You Should Start Your Claim as Soon as Possible

Even though you may have up to three years, starting early gives you the strongest case because:

  • CCTV and dash‑cam footage is often deleted within 30 days
  • Witness memories fade quickly
  • Road conditions and hazards can change
  • Medical evidence is clearer when gathered early
  • Your solicitor can secure better evidence and build a stronger claim

Early action protects both your health and your legal position.

That three‑year deadline applies to most cycling accidents, but there are important exceptions that can shorten or extend the time you have.

Key Time Limit Exceptions for Cycling Accident Claims

1. Date of Knowledge

If your injury wasn’t immediately obvious — for example, delayed concussion symptoms or psychological trauma — the three‑year limit may start from the date you first realised your injury was linked to the accident.

2. Children (Under 18)

The three‑year limit does not start until their 18th birthday. They can claim up to age 21, or a parent/guardian can claim for them at any time before they turn 18.

3. Lack of Mental Capacity

If the injured person lacks mental capacity, there is usually no time limit. The three‑year period only begins if they later regain capacity.

4. Fatal Cycling Accidents

If a loved one has died, the family typically has three years from the date of death or the date they first learned the death was linked to the accident (for example, after a post‑mortem).

5. Hit‑and‑Run or Uninsured Drivers (MIB Claims)

If the driver cannot be identified or is uninsured, you can claim through the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB). The three‑year limit still applies, but early action is strongly recommended.

6. Criminal Injuries (CICA)

If the cyclist was deliberately hit or harmed, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority usually requires claims within two years.

7. Accidents Abroad

Time limits vary by country and can be much shorter — sometimes one or two years — depending on local law.

Cycling can be great but can go wrong in a heartbeat.

We have a great list of ways to stay safe that has been compiled by the cyclists we have helped. If you have any tips you find have helped you. Please email them to us and we’ll ad them to our list. Also send in your ways  to stay warm during your rather fresh rides during the colder months!

5. What If the Driver Didn’t Stop? (Hit & Run)

You can still make a claim even if the driver left the scene.

Hit‑and‑run cycling accidents are handled by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB). You may be able to claim for:

  • Injuries
  • Bike damage
  • Loss of earnings

Even without the driver’s details, you still have options.

6. What If a Pothole Caused My Accident?

You may be able to claim against:

  • The local council
  • Highways England
  • A private landowner

To succeed, you will need evidence of:

  • The pothole
  • Its size and depth
  • Your injuries
  • Damage to your bike
  • The exact location

Photos and measurements are essential.

7. Do I Need a Specialist Cycling Claims Expert?

Cycling accidents are different from car accidents, and a specialist understands:

  • Bike damage valuations
  • Cycling‑specific injuries
  • Road positioning
  • Helmet‑cam evidence
  • Close‑pass incidents
  • Dooring
  • Pothole claims
  • Hit‑and‑run processes
  • The unique risks cyclists face

A general claims company may miss key details that increase your compensation.

8. How Long Do I Have to Make a Claim?

In most cases, you have three years from the date of the accident.

Exceptions include:

  • Children (until age 21)
  • Accidents abroad
  • Criminal injury cases

If you’re unsure, it’s quick to check.

9. How Long Does a Cycling Accident Claim Take?

It depends on several factors, including:

  • Injury severity
  • Whether liability is accepted
  • Whether the driver is insured
  • Whether the case involves the MIB

Simple cases can settle in a few months. More complex cases take longer, especially if injuries are ongoing.

10. What Evidence Helps My Claim?

The strongest evidence includes:

  • Photos of the scene
  • Helmet‑cam footage
  • Witness statements
  • Police report
  • Medical records
  • Bike shop repair quote
  • GPS or Strava data
  • CCTV (if available)

The more evidence you have, the stronger your claim.

11. What If I Was Partly at Fault?

You can still claim.

This is known as split liability. Examples include:

  • Filtering
  • Riding without lights
  • Riding slightly outside the cycle lane
  • Braking suddenly
  • Overtaking slow traffic

Your compensation may be reduced, but you can still recover damages.

12. How Does No Win, No Fee Work?

  • No upfront costs
  • No hidden fees
  • You only pay if your claim succeeds
  • Your fee is taken from the final settlement

It’s designed to make the process simple and risk‑free.

13. How Do I Start a Cycling Accident Claim?

Starting a claim is straightforward:

  • Tell us what happened
  • We assess your case
  • We gather evidence
  • We contact the insurer
  • We negotiate your compensation
  • You receive your settlement

Most of the work is done for you.

14. Your Rights as a Cyclist

You have the right to:

  • Safe road space
  • Proper passing distance
  • Protection from careless driving
  • Compensation if you’re injured
  • Repair or replacement of your bike
  • Medical treatment and rehabilitation

Cyclists are vulnerable road users, and the law recognises this.

15. Need Advice?

If you’ve been involved in a cycling accident, you don’t need to deal with it alone. Specialist advice can make the difference between a small payout and a fair settlement.

If you want, I can now:

  • Reformat the entire Cyclist Accident Guide to match your site’s exact structure
  • Rewrite it in a more Orange Spokes tone
  • Break it into separate SEO pages (Hit & Run, Potholes, Dooring, Close Pass, etc.)
