What should I do straight after a cycling accident?

Firstly get off the road and somewhere safe. Assuming you are able to think fairly straight after the accident, gain as much information as you can. Most people have a phone with a camera and taking as many pictures as you can will really help. Get the details of all the people involved including any witnesses you have. Photo's of the road layout and where both parties were going. Google Earth is a great tool we often use to show where both parties were going. You should also report the accident to the police even if you don't need any medical help at the scene. We advise getting checked at the roadside after an accident as some injuries may not be initially clear and adrenaline can mask symptoms. Exchange details with the other person. A phone number and name of the other person and if there is one, the registration. You may get a load of phone calls from all sorts of people and companies all wanting to represent you which will probably be confusing. Most people don't have any sort of insurance when they are riding a bike. This doesn't mean you can't make an injury claim if you are knocked off your bike. All our costs and your compensation are claimed from the 'at fault' insurers. You can even claim for your bike repairs even if you aren't injured and just want your bike fixed or money for the repairs.
